Fashion shows, new designs
reveal clothing trends for 93

MUCH OF the _ interna-
tional fashion news which
hits the newsstands makes
good reading for fashion
fanatics. and. culture
vultures, but it lacks rele-
vance for ‘true to life’’
clothing. wearers. in . Van-
couver, B.C.

FASHION STATEMENTS

However, 1993 holds a great
dealin ‘store for the western Ca-
nadian world of style. Here is the
news, hot off the’ wire, that will
affect us in the coming year.

Canadian designers
show for spring.

The Toronto Ready-to-Wear

Bailey, which is quickly, becoming
Canada's largest 'and_ best-
represented fashion group. .
~The showing for spring "93 saw
an audience ‘of approximately 700
—_ 300 of: whom were interna-
‘ tional buyers and press. .
This’ year’s» shows ‘included

Halter tops take a variety of
shapes. :

Coat.-dresses are worn open
over cigarette pants, and full
skirts top hot pants or leggings.
Vests are elongated to the hip or
thigh like a jacket.

Dresses are flared, empire’
shaped, tank styled, and detailed
with inset belts, vertical seaming,
side or back button closures and
criss-crosses at back. Long tunic
sweaters in easy shapes are popu-
lar, as are big white shirts.

Fabrics range from menswear-
influenced pinstripes, houndstooth
and glen checks to country
gingham checks, cotton pique and
polka dots and sophisticated
linens, cool wool and Lycra
stretch fabrics,

The new Canadian Apparel
Federation, a national organiza-
tion which was formed in 1992 to
unite Canadian fashion retailers
and designers more. efficiently,
will, become involved in the
Toronto Ready-to-Wear shows in
’93, ensuring an even larger event.
Well- ‘respected Toronto fashion
icon Carol Outram now heads the
Federation’s design division..

Style kings
ride new wave

WINNIPEG DESIGNER twins
Chip and Pepper are creating a
new line’ of. men’s casual wear
called Style’ Kings with a Los
Angeles clothing firm.

Style Kings clothing is based on
50s cool ‘with a ’90s: twist.. The -

collection offers 12 different styles

of. screened T-shirts and sweat-

Chip and Pepper. Foster have
introduced the first line of Style '
Kings: called The Road King Col-
lection, which is inspired by ’50s

be sold: to major department
stores and casual unisex clothing
stores across Canada and the U.S. --

Also watch for ‘'Chip and Pep-
per’s -Cartoon’ Madness,’’' a
Saturday morning NBC-TV car-
toon show.
