20 - Wednesday. Nov. 11, 1992 - North Shore News Team focus pays off for Sentinel in championships THE SENTINEL Spartans continued their recent domi- nance in the swimming pool, as they more than doubled their nearest opposition’s score at the 22nd Annual North Shore Swimming Champicnships held Sunday, Oct. 25, at recCentre Lonsdale. The Burnaby-New Westminster secondary schools’ athletic association held its meet in con- junction with the North Shore competition. Sentinel, provincial champs the last two years, finished the cham- pionships with an aggregate score of 163 (senior girls, 105; senior boys, 58), followed by Hands- worth with a 72-point aggregate (senior girls, 53; senior boys, 19) and Balmoral at 63 (senior girls, 36; senior boys, 27). The difference in the meet for Sentinel was the team’s strong performance in the relay events. “The whole philosophy of our swimming program at Sentinel is to focus on the team, rather than the individuals,” said Spartan coach Tom Walker. That philosophy will probably reap big dividends ai the provin- cials, where only the top three fin- ishers score points. At the North Shore championships the top six are awarded points. The Spartans won three out of the four 400m freestyle relays, in- cluding the boys’ ‘‘A’’ and ‘‘B’’ events and the girls’ ‘‘A’’ event. In the girls’ ‘‘B’’? 400m freestyle relay, Sentinel finished third, behind first-place Handsworth and second-place Burnaby Cen- tral. : In the 200m mediey relay girls’ “A,”’ Sentinel finished one-two, and in the newly created 200m medley relay mixed ‘‘A’’ race, the Spartans placed first and fourth. In total, Sentinel finished first in seven of the 16 relay events. In individual races, Sentinel’s Amialle Lake set the pace to win the 200m individual medley (girls’ “A”’) with a time of 2:49:28. While Sentinel swam away with the overall North Shore title, By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter other North Shore swimmers also posted some excellent times. Handsworth's girls’ relay ‘tA’ team won the opening race of the meet, the 400m freestyle relay (girls’ ‘*B’’). Strachan Hartley from Handsworth finished first in the 50m backstroke (boys’ ‘‘B’’}. West Vancouver secondary school swimmer Gina Elliot won the inaugural 50m freestyle (girls’ ‘*A’’) event, establishing a time of 00:30:51 as the meet record. Elliot also finished first in the 100m butterfly (girls’ *‘A'’) race. West Vancouver swimmers cap- tured the gold in the 200m freestyle reiay (mixed ‘'A’’). Michelle Jones from Windsor posted the fastest time in the 100m backstroke (girls’ ‘‘A’’), and finished a close second to team- mate Zuzana Hajek in the 100m freestyle (girls’ ‘*A’’). St. Thomas Aquinas’ Nadine Zarifeh took first place honors in the 100m _ breaststroke (girls’ A), An ‘“A’’-class swimmer is an athlete who has participated with a swim club or has had a private swimming coach during the 1992 calander year. The provincial diving and sychronized swimming events will take place on Friday, Nov. 13, at SFU. Due to low participation rates, competitors in these two sports are entered directly into the provincials without the need for qualifications.
