PARIS HAS A TOWER. COPENHAGEN A MERMAID. NOW WE sAVE SOMETHING TO HARP ABOUT! Most famous cities have a sight to behold. Now, the City of North Vaacouver presents two monumental sculptures: a woman with a harp, entitled "North Shore Rhapsody" and "Joe Sustemente Trumpet.” These sculptures will be installed at Rogers Plaza (beside the Keg Restaurant above Esplanade Avenue) this week. They will play an imporcant role in "Changing the Face of the City" of North Vancouver in the near future. PUTTING "ART IN PUBLIC PLACES." hustalling the sculptures is one of the final steps in a year long process . Last May, the North Shore Arts Commission and the City of North Vancouver released a call for expres- sions of interests and qualifications from professional artists in anticipation of choosing a piece of public artwork for Rogers Plaza. They were looking for a piece of artwork that would provide a sense of place, a sense of encounter, a sense of time and a sense of celebration tc the site. There was an overwhelming response of twenty-three submis- sions. Richard Wojceichowski won the competition with his two part submission of harp and trumpet. ‘THE ARTIST AND HIS ART. Polish born artist, Wojciechowski, is highly regarded in the European community as a sculptor, muralist, painter, teacher and conservator of historical monuments. His original artwork is in national collections of France, Poland, Germany, Italy and Japan. He and his family moved to Canada in 1990. Richard prepared for the Rogers Plaza competition by visiting the proposed site and imagining what kind of sculpture would best reflect the history and the future of the City Of North Vancouver. He relates: "I found the plaza an interesting space: an _ intimate gathering place. What a great place fora musical instrument! It was then I visualized these compositions. In the centre of the plaza I saw a woman with a harp playing a timeless melody with musical phrases narrating the past and foretelling the future." a uy On the balcony of the plaza overlooking the street, the second sculpture, a fifteen foot trumpet will be installed. This instrument celebrates the legend of Joe Bustemente, a one-armed Chilean seaman. He lived on the North Shore, and played his instrument in foggy weather to help assist captains in navigating their boats safely into harbour. Once the trumpet is installed there are plans to have it eventually play a melody everyday at noon. DISCOVERY ART WALK. The harp and trumpet are the City of North Vancouver's first public artworks in a proposed discovery art walk. The original plan calls for an installation of public art from the waterfront up to central Lonsdale, at various locations, in order to encourage tourism and business. THE HARP WILL BE INSTALLED AT ROGERS PLAZA ON APRIL 22ND, AND THE TRUMPET ON APRIL 24TH. AN OFFICIAL UNVEILING IS PLANNED FOR MAY 23RD AT 11:30 AM.
