Boat explodes

HORSESHOE BAY residents awoke with a bang Satur-
day morning when a shrimp boat moored at the Horse-
shoe Bay government wiarf exploded.

A 27-year-old man aboard the 36-foot Five Spot was
blasted clear of the boat and made it to shore blackened,
singed and with shredded clothing but without major in-
jury. The boat srstained considerable fire damage.

-According to a West Vancouver Fire Department
spokesman, Steve Starbuck had been cleaning the boat’s
engine. When he started the gasoline engine at approxi-
mately 8 a.m., the boat blew. He said Starbuck was
lucky (o escape with his life.

The government wharf at Horseshoe Bay is a regular
point of transit for explosives. Last year, 38,952
kilograms of explosives were shippec from the wharf.

But said Horseshoe Bay harbor master William Lord,
**It’s quite well controlled. I think this dangerous cargo
stuff is blown out of proportion — a box of dynamite,
you throw it into a fire and it will just burn. It’s not like
Holiywocd where the whole world blows up.””

Court appearance

TWO MEN who face break and enter charges in « case
involving an alleged burglary at a focal church are
scheduled to return to North Vancouver provincial court.

Michael Ronald Arnold, 19, charged with break and

enter, is set to appear in court Feb. 18. Shane Jeffery -

Hawkes is also charged with break and enter. He is
scheduled to fix a date for trial on Feb. 12.

A North Vaecouver RCMP officer is the subject of
two police investigations following the Jan. 17 shooting
of Hawkes. The North Vancouver teen was shot in the
shoulder during a church burglary investigation by North
Vancouver RCMP.

Randy Allen Wanek, 21, was sentenced to two years

less a day Jan. 29 after he pleaded guilty to a charge of

break aud enter iaid against him in connection with the
church incident.

“SAdditional charges ugainst the three, stemming from

police information and listed in previous News uccounts,

were not laid. ‘

Cars burned

NORTH SHORE firefighters were kept busy last week
respomding to car fires.

Sn West Vancouver, firefighters were called to 883
Falirmile Rd. Feb. 5 when a 1983 Mercedes caught fire.

The front end of the vehicle was extensively damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At 5:40 s.m. on Feb. 7, North Vancouver District Fire
Department firefighters were called to the parking lot of
Eastvicw Elementary School, 1801 Mountain Hwy.

They arrived to find a 1986 Mazda 323 totally engulf-
ed in flames. The North Vancouver RCMP are in-
vestigating the suspicious fire.
