theatre festiva! that saw produc-
tions staged in various venues, in-
cluding one in the Vancouver Air-
port lounge.

Juliani considers it a “‘pre-Fr-
inge Fringe Festival.”

The difference being, of course,
that ail of the plays were free; au-
diences paid by donation.

“1 remember a couple of
women in their 50s who came to
see one of our productions. After
the play they gave us two strudels
as a way of saying thank you. That
image has always stayed with
me.”

Savage Ged played such an im-
portant role in Juliani’s life he even
designed his and actor Donna
Wong's wedding after a Savage
God-style play. He calls it a
“Savage God Wedding” in that
like many of his company’s works,
the ceremony moved from roorn
to room.

“A lot of people didn’t even
know it was a rea! wedding,” says
Juliani with a grin. | remember
standing under the bridal canopy

_ and hearing one person say, ‘Is

Juliani remained so involved in

. theatre development that it wasn't
.until the mid-’70s when he began
acting again.

production of The Miser he’s been

cast as a fashionable shipping
magnate, Signor Anselm, the deus
ex machina who arrives at the end
of the play to solve problems and
reveal lost identities.

Apparently, director Larry Lillo
phoned Wong to tell her about the
pan he had in mind for Juiiani.

“Can he act?’’ Lille jokingly
asked Wong, not having seen
Juliani for over 10 years.

Juliani says he’s impressed with
Cone’s re-working of Moliere and
believes this may well be Norman
Browning’s (who plays the stingy
Harpagon) crowning achievement
to date.

One of the reasons he accepted
the part of Anselra was that it
wouldn't interfere with his full-
time job. Since 1982, juliani has
found the perfect headquarters
from which to expose Canadians
to their own writers, composers
and performers — the CBC — as
exécutive producer of special pre-
jects for CBC's radio drama net-
work,

His production of George Ryga’s
The Ecstasy of Rita Joe was chosen
as Canada’s entry into the 1991
Prix Italia competition. it was the
first time Ryga’s moving play had
been produced for radic.

His job at the CBC has allowed
him to finance personal projects
and remain active in the arts
community (he’s currently presi-
deat of the B.C. Boys Choir), but
judging by his new-found com-
mitment to acting, Juliani’s time at
the network may well be nearing
the end.

“I’ve never stayed anywhere
more than five years...‘there’s a
certain amount of wisdom in inse-
curity.’ “”

Designer visits Park Royal
