Is this the way our ‘fiscally responsible’’ representatives treat the hard-earned dollars of the taxpayers? Is this why we have a staggering deficit that’s driving in- terest rates into the stratosphere? Is this why we supposedly need a GST? We suppose you will say it's not a gift, it’s a foan, an investment. Well, our arithmetic tells us that $600,000 at 2.5 per cent interest over 20 years will result in annual payments of about $38,400. On the market at, say 12 per cent, those payments would buy about $287,000. This leaves $313,000 as an outright gift! (And that’s assuming the marina stays solvent long enough to pay.) Then maybe you will tell us to consider the jobs that will be created by that $600,000, to which we reply: What about the jobs that will be lost because of the additions we could no longer at- ford to build, the vacations we couldn't afford to take, the boats we couldn't buy, because vou and the Union Steamship Company Marina were having a good time with our money? Next, perhaps, we'll have io hear about all the tourist dollars that will flow into B.C. Jobs will be created and there will be pro- sperity for all. Or will it simply mean we'll be priced out of our own markets by tourists waving our own savings at us? And of course there will be the endless taik of the benefits for Bowen Island. Quite frankly, we like Bowen Island the way it is. However, we realize that we don't own the whole island, and fairness demands that we grant other owners and residents the right to their visions too, but not at our expense! Paul and Cheryl Miniato Bowen Island Caulfeild name jinxed Dear Editor: West Vancouverites upset by the effects of developers’ depredations in the Caulfeild area with the resultant bare hillsides have a parallel. Loch Lomond’s ‘‘Bonnie Banks’? damage began as far back as 1746 with the roadbuilding ac- tivity of an English army officer named Caulfeild. He pushed his line along the steep hill face as part of the London government’s plan to keep the Scottish clans ‘n order after the Jacobite defeat at Culloden. A contributor to the Scots Magazine notes that subsequent construction has followed Caulfeild’s example in his account “S ANTIQUE | is of the area: ‘‘We were to explore above the (modern) road ... where the makers of A&Z have hacked into the steep banks making grey rock cuttings where there were primrose banks and joyous woodlands.’’ The description bears an un- canny resemblance to the view that greets the eastbound traveller on the Upper Levels Highway, on the hill above Horseshoe Bay. One’s eyes are assaulted by the shattered, treeless slopes of the Jocal Caulfeild. The Caulfeiid name seems to be fatal to natural beauty whether in Scotland or British Columbia.
