LIFESTYLES PROTECT YOUR HOME Break-ins on the rise APPROXIMATELY 98 per cent of people who break into homes are amateurs and concentrate on residential areas simply because so few ever get caught. With the degree of protection most people have, the odds are in the intruder’s favor. ‘*That’s why in most areas resi- dential break-ins are on the rise and will likely continue to rise over the next few years,’’ says Andy Gyorffy, vice-president of a major alarm systems company. These criminals are also getting smarter and more knowledgeable. They know the strengths and weaknesses of most security systems and how to dea! with them. In fact, most homeowners help them by advertising the kind of system they have by placing a sticker on a window or door. The intruder knows that in many instances he can get in, take what he came for, and get out before the alarm activates or the police arrive. In some instances, he simply bypasses the system. For the police, the problem has been compounded by a large number of false alarms. In fact, says Gyorffy, almost 97 per cent of the alarms answered by police last year were false. This, he adds, is not likely to change unless there is a significant change in the techno- logy of the conventional ‘hard wire’’ security systems developed ‘for the most part some half cen- bia paying too much. before you buy. “NOBODY BEATS ag OUR SELECTION! This means they have no protection against night-time burglaries.’’ New security systems overcome the weaknesses of these systems, stop intruders in their tracks, no matter where they try to enter, eliminate false alarms and do not change a family’s lifestyle. These systems incorporate the latest developments in microchip and radio frequency technology, using an ultra-sensitive audio detection system which constantly monitors sounds in the home, “listening for sounds’? caused by forced entry. These sounds are identified by a microprocessor and other compo- nents built into each unit, which enables it to differentiate between formal, everyday living sounds and those sounds made by forcible entry. Whenever sensors detect any of these sounds, a signal to the main unit immediately activites the alarm — lights go on and an inside and outside siren go into action. “And it does it before the in- truder has a chanice to get into the house.
