Coroner powerless to police canyon regulations

THE B.C. Coroner’s office

can do nothing to prevent

people from diving and swimming in t_ynn Canyon Park, a
Vancouver regional coroner investigating recent accidents
and deaths in the park said Thursday.

Coroner Mary Lou Merner call-
ed a meeting on Wednesday of
North Vancouver District
emergency crews to discuss the
current situation in Lynn Canyon
Park.

But in an interview Thursday,
Merner said there is nothing her
office can do te prevent the public
from going past the park’s posted

Merner said that when she went
to the park last year to investigate
the deaths of two people whe died
in the park’s natural, but treach-
erous creek pools, she noticed
safety signs posted near the pools.

she went back to Lynn Canyon
Park this year to investigate three
other deaths, the posted safety

Park safety task force and that a
decision has been made to have
park rangers patrol the park for
part of the year.

““We can’t prevent people from
disobeying the signs, and that's
the botiom line,’” said Merner.

Dykeman said he thought the
meeting was worthwhile.

additional measures and_ that’s
part of the frustration,’ said
Dykeman.

Recent Lynn Canyon rescue
statistics released by district coun-
cil found that the district fire
department has performed 70
rescues at Lynn Canyon Park
since 1985. Only 12 of those in-
volved North Vancouver residents.
