Supreme Court Chief Justice William Esson. Three local TV sta- tions had applied to televise former premier Bill Vander Zalm’s breach cf trust trial set for this week. U.S. courts have permitted televised coverage of their pro- ceedings, but have restricted the electronic media by limiting camera angles and distances between the camera and court participants. An Ontario judge also recently denied TV coverage, saying it tended to produce an adverse effect on participants. But proponents say TV coverage is 2 contemporary way for the public to be in- formed about how justice is served in the public court system. Should Canadian court be televised? Mike Tacidi 2 Carmela Facchin North Vancouver I don’t think so because sometimes too much public exposure is not good for anybody. Tammy Bulpit North Vancouver .I don’t think they should because it’s there in the court file, if they want to look. Other than that, | don't think it’s any- body’s business. Carole Bright North Vancouver No, it’s an invasion of court proceedings, and it tends (io give too much exposure. Norm Wallace North Vancouver I don’t think 530. The cameras may influence people’s thinking in the court. Nerth Vancouver I think it’s a good idea, because most people should know what goes oa in court. Watershed meeting planned for SFU downtown campus ‘Alternative’ views aired May 21 SEVEN SPEAKERS are scheduled to be featured at a ‘Watershed Warnings’’ presentation of alternative watershed management views on Thursday, May 21 at Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre campus. The speakers will include UBC botany biologist Andre’ Arsenault, Vancouver Natural History Socie- ty representative Kevin Bell, UBC forestry professor Michael Feller, Burke Mountain Naturalists researcher Elaine Golds, Society Promoting Environmental Con- servation (SPEC) vice-president Paul Hundal, Friends of the Wa- tershed spokesman Ross Muirhead and Western Canada Wilderness Committee forester Mark Ware- ing. Muirhead said the group will critique the Greater Vancouver Regional District's (GVRD) new watershed management policy. The policy permits logging in the Capilano, Coquitlam and Seymour watersheds to improve and maintain water quality. Critics have said the wording of the new policy is open-ended and may be interpreted by GVRD staff in the same way as the contentious old watershed logging policy. The GVRD approved the logg- ing of nine cut-block areas totall- ing. 50 hectares this month at the same time that it approved the new logging policy. The three watersheds contain valuable old-growth timber and rare animal species such as the spotted owl, whose numbers have not been accurately recorded locally. The fecture presentations are scheduled to be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at SFU Harbour Cen- tre, S5LS West Hastings St. For more information, call 986-9773.
