8 — Sunday, February 23, 1992 - North Shore News MAILBOX Seymour area needs new route Dear Editor: Last year I wrote an open letter to the North Vancouver District Council’s planning and engineer- ing departments complaining that trees blown down due to high winds across Mt. Seymour Road prevented traffic of any kind to proceed until B.C. Hydro had temoved the fallen trees and repaired the lines. This was an emergency situation that was probably handled as ex- peditiously as possible, but still entailed hours of no _ access. Overlooking the inconvenience suffered by the area residents, | stressed the possibilities of disaster if emergency personnel couldn't access an emergency. But nothing has been done. On Sunday, Jan. 19, due to a highly publicized ice sculpting ex- hibit at the top of Mt. Seymour, we had a repeat of the same situa- tion. Four thousand people decided, in a matter of two or three hours to spend a pleasant Sunday after- noon to see something that is quite unique. Unfortunately, when the parking lots filled up and the northbound traffic exceeded the south by a ratio of 100 to one, things became serious. The mountain people sent per- sonnel down to advise motorists that if they could make a U-turn they would be making a good move. Finally the RCMP station- ed three officers at Mt. Seymour Parkway and Mt. Seymour Road intersection. My wife, returning home from a visit, was not allow- ed to make a left-hand turn off Mt. Seymour Parkway nor a right turn. The District of North Van- couver is opening up property so rapidly in this area, and when you hear of the cost of a single lot it makes you wonder why they can't take a small strip of district land, which they or we own, and give us a little peace of mind by construc- ting another road. J.B. Kerr North Vancouver Move Westview liquor store Dear Editor: If the Westview overpass has been scrapped or put on hold I have a suggestion. To alleviate the traffic problem, as it is a dangerous area for both motorists and pedestrians, the YOU SAID IT! EUTHANASIA IS in the headlines again with the recent death of Nancy B. The Quebec woman who was paralyzed from the neck down finally won the right to end her life and was disconnected from her respirator on Feb 13. Quebec Superior Court Justice Jacques Dufour ruled that her doctor would not be committing a crime by disconnecting her respirator. THE North Shore News survey team polled 398 readers about euthanasia legislation. When asked ‘‘Would you support legislation for passive euthanasia?’’ 44% of respondents said ‘‘Yes.” 25.6% said they would not support such legislation and 188% did not know.
