It’s being operated by Appliance Recycling Centers of America inc. (ARCA), which has its head- quarters in Minneapolis. The 16,700 square foot Cana- dian plant, situated in an industrial park just south of Vancouver, can extract the CFC coolant from 20 fridges simultaneously, The CFC is refrigerator dismantling centre near then stored by Hydro, and the steel hulk and copper piping are sold as scrap. While the refrigerator buy-back program has not yet expanded to the North Shore (stay tuned, says BC Hydro), there is a company that will pick up major appliances, water tanks, furnaces and air con- ditioners from North Shore resi- dents. Community Appliance (525- 0266) charges $10 to pick up two items, and $5 for each item there- after. Depending on their backlog, custamers may have to wait a week or so for pickup, but do have the reassurance that their appliances are being recycled as scrap metal with all CFCs recov- ered. Appliances can also be taken down to the North Shore Transfer Station on Riverside Drive to undergo the same process, a ser- vice free to local residents. Power Smart's aim, by the year 2010, is to be providing annua! energy savings in B.C. of 5,600 million kilowatt hours, enough electricity for 560,000 new homes. The $600 million campaign is at- tracting attention worldwide. 13 other major Canadian utilities have adopted it as well as state power agencies in Czechoslovakia. ‘Reverse vending’ machines tested CUSTOMERS AT North Shore Stong’s stores now have the oppor- tunity to bring back pop cans for deposit in automated reverse ven- ding machines that accept the cans and offer a receipt tor the amount of deposit.
