THERE’S MORE than meets the eye when it comes to the relation- ship between people — especially women — and food. Food doesn't . just’ provide bodily sustenance; many women have a psychological relationship with food that may result in uncontrolled binging or excessive, unhealthy dieting. News kKeporter Susan Chernov of the West Vancouver YMCA _ has offered several ‘‘Mind Over Weight"' workshops for people to heip them understand their relationship with ? It’s mind over weight food and how it can relate to their self-esteem, negative body image and unsuccessful attempts at weight reduction. Examples of women who have taken her course include a figure skater in an ice show company who, while working, was forced to keep her weight low or have her pay docked, and another woman who, as a child, was weighed every week by her mother and had her allowance taken away if her weight was up. Other, recently divorced, women found they were choosing to keep weight on because they were using it as an unconscious defence against the sexual over- tures from men that they were not yet prepared to handle. “If people are choosing fat- making behaviors, they are doing it for @ reason,’’ asserts Chernov. “Often compulsive eaters don’t know how to be good to themselves, so they eat to feel bet- ter.”” Although Chernov offers exam- ples of different women’s experi- ences with food, she is careful to stress that everyone’s case is unique, both psychologically and, when taking into account different builds and metabolisms, physiologically. Because Chernov believes that “Often, you'll never yourself,"’ says Chernov. once you're a ‘pear,’ be a *banana."’’ The results of her course are varied. Some women stop hiding their bodies under layers of con- cealing clothing. Some decide they aren’t ready to change their weight at the present time — a thought- out decision that earns Chernov's full support. Some women find their relationships with their part- ners improving as they discuss some of these issues for the first time and find their self-esteem growing. Instead, she encourages class participants to eat a large, healthy lunch so they aren't so likely to be controlled by their hunger during the evening. Women are also asked not to weigh themselves. ‘‘I'm trying to get them to trust themselves and Not use external cues as to where their body is at,’ explains Cher- nov. “It’s getting more in touch with your body.”” She also works on changing women’s poor self-image. and notes how our society has become obsessed with thinness. Marilyn Monroe, she points out, was 5°4”’ and weighed 145 Ibs. — but many people today would consider that “‘overweight.”’ “It’s a matter of accepting what you are and starting to learn to like NEWS photo Teny Peters ACCORDING TO Susan Chernov of the YMCA, being wedded to the scales is not what dieting is all about.
