Dead batteries cause hot surprise

change and got quite surprise.
The ‘‘dead’* battery was HOT.
There's no telling how hot it might
have become had he left it rattling
around with his change. He'd
probabiy have noticed should his
pants have caught fire.

my purse before a trip for
replacements, The bottom of my
purse resembles the debris ungar-
thed by a metai detector.

Could a battery ‘anite the whole
tung? Aside from the inconve-
nience of having to douse a fire in
the midst of a shopping mall, what
do you teil the credit card com-

Incidentally, this feeds ta a
number of questons about the safe
disposal of burned-out batteries.
What could happen te them if you
toss them into a trash compactor?
Or a garbage Un containing a lot
of meal?

What do vou do when the bat-
tery in Junior’s toy dies? Do you
remove it or does the kid play with
it like another toy?

If nothing else, Pm quitting
toting dead batteries and, possibly,
I'm cleaning out my purse.

Along the same fines, give some
thought to where you carry
disposable butane lighters. They've
been known to ignite pockets as
vial

It takes planning to get a meal
ready when you're short of time
and shorter on money. Often, a
two-minute work-out the night be-
fore will improve the quality and
the stove-to-table speed for any
rushed cook.
