44 - Wednesday, November 23, 1988 - North Shore News Campaign helps needy Nicaraguans THIS YEAR’S Tools for Peace material aid campaign to help Nicaragua rebuild has become more urgent than ever in the wake of Hurricane Joan. Winds reaching 220 km an hour have left a trail of death and destruction along Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast. The death toll is over 100. Three hundred thousand people are homeless, 65,000 of them children less than five years old. Almost all the houses in Bluefields, a community of 39,000 on the coast, have been destroyed. In Rama, Nueva Guinea and much of eastern Nicaragua, 80 per cent of the houses no longer exist. Crops and warehouses of corn, rice, coffee and bananas have been heavily damaged, leaving Nicaragua in desperate need of food and forcign exchange. Wharfs, fish boats and fish pro- cessing plants on the Atlantic coast have been totally destroyed. Tools for Peace has been collec- ting material aid for Nicaragua since 1981, hefping it survive seven years of overt, covert and economic war waged against it by the United States. Even before Hurricane Joan, economic losses from the U.S./contra war totalled $3.6 billion. Over 3,000 civilians have died, and 250,000 men, women and children have been driven from their homes. Now, following the worst natu- ral disaster in its history, Nicaragua’s need is greater than ever. Priority projects for this year’s campaign already include blankets, rubber boots and funds for roofing. But the 300,000 peo- ple left homeless by Hurricane Joan can’t wait for our usual shipment in the spring. Tools for Peace has joined with Oxfam- Canada, CUSO, Inter Pares, and the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice to raise funds for emergency relief and reconstruc- tion. This coalition is sending a three-person delegation to Central America to assess the damage first-hand and to determine the victims’ specific needs. Donations to help Nicaragua rebuiid can be sent to Tools for Peace at 1672 East 10th Avenue, Vancouver V5N 1X5. Phone 879- 7216 to find out what else you can do to help. Introducing Simply Grand...
