8 - Sunday, October 16, 1988 - North Shore News W. Van Council defends conference attendance WEST VANCOUVER District Council members recently defended their at- tendance at various municipal conferences after an area resident criticized the municipality for spen- ding taxpayers’ money on the business trips. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer In a letter to council, Lionel Lewis criticized aldermen for spending ratepayers’ money to at- tend the conferences. “Many invitations to various events are received every year, but only those that show probable benefit to the community are at- tended,’” said Ald. Alex Broken- shire. West Vancouver aldermen, as a tule, attend fewer conferences than aldermen in other North Shore municipalities. “West Vancouver aldermen are very conscious of the dollar,” director of finance George Hor- wood told the News. But Lewis was particularly in- censed after learning from council minutes that Ald. Dave Finlay and his wife had attended the Heritage Canada Foundation Annual Con- ference in Charlottetown, P.E.I., in the summer, ‘‘almost the most easterly end of vast Canada."’ | He objected to the tax expen- ditures that “increase relentlessly year after year, being squandered on an apparently pointless and needless official paid trip to a ‘Heritage’ Conference, which con- ference is of no use whatsoever to the district of West Vancouver....”’ “This was not a small con- ference,”” countered Ald. Gordon Rowntree. ‘‘Virtually every com- munity in the country was repre- sented.’’ Only two aldermen attended this year’s Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the first time anyone other than the mayor has made the trip.
