Sunday, Maret 27, 1988 North Shore News Children tortured in South Africa, Amnesty Int. claims Dear Editor: At the risk of confusing Doug Collins and his friends, many News readers may be interested to hear that South Africa has just been cited by an Amnesty Interna- tional report as one of 18 countries where children have been tortured, killed or otherwise mistreated by the state, According to the report (as cited by the Manchester Guardian Weekly, Jan. 17) thousands of South African children have been arrested, some as young as seven years old. The report indicates that “most of them have been assaulted W. Van team embarrasses Dear Editor: Recently, on a midnight flight to Toronto, Ontario, | sat back in my seat, closed my cyes and looked forward to a quiet and relaxing trip, as most folks do. A hockey team, with members very expensively dressed, proudly displaying their West Vancouver Hockey Club badges, was also on board. The players were excited and noisy as are all young teenagers on such a big adventure. Sleep never arrived. The noise increased. Most passengers were too well mannered to complain. The purpose of this Ictter is to convey to the parents of the youths how very poorty their kids behav- ed. It was an embarrassment to me, a West Vancouver resident. There was no apparent adult supervision, Next time a team representative knocks on my front door, begging, for (empty bottle) funds, their re- quest will fall on deaf cars. Unfor- tunately those few bad-mannered young men have spoiled a good thing for the many others who follow. Donald L. As an an- nual appointment, for the last three years | was an employee, | was the training operator for Alta Lake, Squamish and Pemberton areas. As a past resident in Pemberton (before Highway 99 was put north of Squamish) and now as a resi- dent in North Vancouver, ! definitely feel that privatizing the highways will endanger public health and safety and jeopardize the public’s right to high quality public services. Mr. Collins undoubtedly prefers to cite information provided by the South African government, which severely restricts the activities of reporters trying to confirm or negate stories about South Africa. But Amnesty International, which has won a Nobel Peace Prize, must be taken to be one of ihe most credible sources of information about South Africa. Amnesty does not carry the right-wing credentials preferred by Mr. Collins, but most people will be satisfied with the fact that Aninesty is disliked by repressive regimes of both right-wing and left-wing persuasions.
