Smaller, cleaner and leaner
running engines have squeez-
ed so much from a drop of
fuel that it’s becoming next
to impossible for engineers to
improve mileage under the
hood. Instead, they're having
to come up with aerodynamic
changes for better fuel

economy.

The notion that smaller is
better, that sparked the
switch from big cars in the
early 70s, remains the basis
for increased sales of sub-
compacts, scaled-down
trucks and mini-vans in the
80s.

Until about 1982, smaller
also meant less powerful.
Fortunately, that’s no longer
true; the performance engine
is making a comeback.

rear-wheel driven family car,
whose metal body and frame
construction weighed close to

by a thirsty V-8 engine.

Today’s front-wheel driven
cars are made of iight-weight
steel alloys, plastics and

four or six-cylinder

A golden oldie

FRANK PARKER and his wife took a happy inaugural run in their 1927 Model T
roadster over the weekend. The car was put into storagé since 1961, when it was con-
structed from parts and made its first appearance on North Shore roads Saturday.
