Editor: - | must takeexception to your editorial ‘‘Viewpoint’’ of Sunday, February 5,-1984. It seems obvious (to me, at: least) that you neither recognize nor understand the very simple issue which tnakes a by-law such as that-:: proposed by the West Van couver council necessary; - With ‘regard. to non- smoking areas in restaurants, you.state in your-article-that this -matter should not be legislated but rather, should be left up to public opinion to bring about the .Dog packs endanger residents Dear Editor: . For quite some time, there has been a serious problem with unleashed dogs, roam- ing at will, and forming into packs on Tobruk Avenue. Many phone calls, letters and complaints to the Pound, have gone unheeded. We have neverseen a pound vehi- cle on Tobruk Avenue. One of the biggest of- fenders is a German Shepherd. This dog wears no “collar, so it’s highly unlikely that the. owners have pur- chased a dog license! It at- tracts the other free-wheeling canines.of the area, which in- clude. a husky, -malamute,- boxer and many Heinz 57s. It goes without saying that the German Shepherd, Husky and Malamute present the greatest danger to life and limb. As members of the wolf family, the blood lust is never far fromthe surface, especially once they form.in- to packs. Someone is going to ‘be attacked and cannibalized if this dangerous situation is not stopped immediately! A nasty automobile accident is also highly possible, as the pack romps around the road- way in front of oncoming cars. Residents of the Hamilton/Fell area are get- ting desperate. Why does the pound continue ta ignore our calls for help? Could it be because we live in an older, somewhat rundown part of the City? Perhaps a call of complaint received from a more affluent area of North Vancouver would be answered quite swiftly! B. No :one has ever demanded. of these for their non-smoking patrons. Rather, these restaurateurs (for whatever their reasons) have chosen not to provide such an area. The truth of this matter is Save dogs ‘Dear Editor. From my volunteer work with various animal rights groups, I know: ‘that many North Vancouver citizens are deeply concrned about the treatment of animals. And I am requesting -help from these people. You probably know that some dogs from Vancouver City Pound are sold to UBC for research purposes (168 in 1982). A delegation of Van- couver . citizens appeared before our City: Hall in November asking for. the cancellation of the Pound/UBC contract. It was denied, but we got two im- provements. One — there is now a sign in our pound in- forming citizens that dogs -may .be sold to..UBC, and Two — UBC must now report yearly on the use made of each of the Pets Purchased _ provide a “fon-smoking: area’ generate
