There will never a large
open pit mining operation on
Gambier Island according
North Vancovver-Seymour
MLA Jack Davis.

Davis made the statement
earlier this month in a
speech on the enviroment
made in the B.C.
Legislature. _ .

“The government, in its
heart of hearts, knows that it
can never approve an im-
mense digging, hauling and
milling operation there,” he
said.

“The public in the Lower
Mainland area, and across
the Strait of Georgia on
Vancouver Island for that
matter, will not tolerate the
thought of tens of millions of
tonnes of mineral wastes
being discharged each year
into Howe Sound.”

“In other words we will
never have a big copper-
molybdenum mine on
Gambier Island.”

Davis said the government

should not ask the 20th’

Century Energy Corporation

exploratory drilling program |
before coming to a decision
on the issue, because the
government will not approve
the project anyway.

“We should tell the 20th
Century Energy Corporation
that this is the end of the
road.”

“We should buy them
out.” ;

Davis said it will be better
to buy out the company now
rather than wait until it is
worth millions of dollars.

New name for LGH unit

it was a difficult decision.

But residents living in the
extended care unit at Lions
Gate Hospital have a new
name for their home —
Evergreen House. ~

Last month the patients
started a contest to rename

the unit and make it sound
less institutional. The board
of directors had to choose
between 48 suggestions sent
in by patients, staff and
North Shore residents.

It wasn’t easy as can be
seen from the other finalists
