cn ABE NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD ASSURED . . . The 347 volt electric lighting system at Seycove School is “not. unsafe and is in compliance with the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code,” an electrical engineer assured North Vancouver School Board at its regular meeting last week. L.P. Gander of D.W. Thomson Consultants Ltd., the firm reponsible for in- stalling the system, told trustees that any voltage can be lethal, given the right combination of cir- cumstances. “It’s the current that kills,” he said. “If you had sweaty palms or one foot in water, 40 volts could be fatal.” Gander was responding to concerns put forth by Philip Ingram at the board's last mecung, June 10. He said the dangerous incidents cited by Ingram resulted from abuse of switch in- stallations in unsupervised areas. He said the use of 120 volt switching (used = in homes) would not alter the fact that “if any clectrical ORDER IN - installation is abused it will be hazardous.” Gander explained that rule 3102 of the Electrical Code, which refers to in- dustrial and commercial buildings, has been in- terpreted to mean any building other than residences. He said Seycove was not unique and listed a number of other schools in the province and other parts of Canada where a 347 volt system is operating. Board members’ were presented with correspondence dating back to 1977 which showed that all necessary precautions and procedures had been followed, including the installation of “tamper- proof screws. “But tamper-proof screws are only tamper-proof unul you want to undo them,” Gander noted. He was skeptical Uhat warning signs over the switches would be effecauve. “The more you bnng it to their attention, the more they'll try to check i out,” he said.
