WE RELY on electricity to
do many things in ou: daily
lives, from that first cup of
coffee in the morning to the
nightly news before we go
to bed, and countless activi-
ties in between.

To keep you and your family
safe from electrical fires, District
of North Vancouver Fire Services
encourages you to use the follow-
ing guidelines:

@ When you shop for appliances
or tools, look for the mark of a
recognized testing laboratory, such
as Underwriters Laboratories of
Canada (ULC) or Canadian
Standards Association (CSA), on
the box or appliance itself.

@ If an appliance is hot to the
touch, sparks or does noi operate
properly, unplug it immediately,
and have it repaired or replaced.

® Portable appliances should on-
ly be plugged in when you intend
to use them. Otherwise, keep them

get them ready to be hardened off
in late May and final placement
outdoors in early June.

This year’s cold weather in June
would have caused a problem only
to those plants that had not been
preconditioned by gradually in-
troducing them to cool outdoor
temperatures.

For this reason, you should be
careful with potted plants pur-
chased from garden centres.

Many of these plants are fresh
out of the greenhouse and the first
touch by our cold soggy soil will
send them in to a transplant shock
that they will never recover from.
Harden them off.

remember you should not use
water to extinguish it. You could
receive a severe shock.

pull the plug,

if the fire is small, put it out,
but be prepared to evacuate the
area, and call the fire department.

If you cannot turn the power
off, a multi-purpose (ABC), dry
chemical extinguisher can be used.

As long as it is used safely,
electricity can greatly improve the
quality of life.
