t 22, 1993 - North Shore N Exhilarating rock climb provided by North Shore’s Crown Mountain SEEN FROM downtown Vancouver, the ragged shark-tooth peak of Crown Mountain, (4,931 feet, 1,50S metres) clearly domi- nates the North Shore skyline. By John Moore Contributing Writer Ironically, because it is located “behind” (northwest of) Grouse Mountain, it’s almost impossible to see from populated areas on the North Shore. Like the Lions, Crown Moun- tain makes an excellent objective for a full day hike, if you're in good shape, with the additional challenge of un easy but ex- hilaratingly exposed rock climb to the summit. As always, gel an early Start to ensure you are out of the woods well before sunset. The North Shore Rescue Team has already been called out to save the bacon of far too many people who have set off ill-equipped on strenuous hikes in the late afternoon this season with little or no knowledge of the terrain or route. (This hike takes approximately eight hours: four out, three back, with an hour for lunch. Do not leave in the afternoon.) If you have an annual Grouse Mountain Skyride pass, take the first tram at 9 a.m. If not, leave at feast an hour earlier and get in some training for next year’s Grouse Grind on the trail up.
