So, we were once again picking paint, carpet, and fix- tures. It’s like deja vu ali over old house new look again. Remodelling a bath can be an expensive proposition. If you have to move existing plumbing lines and electrical you are looking at a costly job. One way around this is to work with what you have and give it an update. Because this was our guest bedroom and ensuite we decided to keep the job simple (ic. cheap). One of the chal- lenges that faced us was an old cast iron claw foot tub. There was no way this tub was going to fit through the door even if we wanted to replace it. The plan was to have it refinished. Painted in purple and white, the tub looked as if it had been used as an outdoor planter. - So the first call was to a tub refinishing company. Fortunately for us the cost of refinishing the tub came in relatively inexpensive. The results were amazing! I definitely recommend this to anyone who is consid- ering replacing an old tub. The old carpet was then ‘stripped and new carpet laid before the faucets and plurnb- ing were attached. After the — refinishing process we opted for a black exterior on the cub. I’ve always liked the colours yel- low and white for a guest suite. Decorated with black accessories the look is clean and crisp yet very cozy. Once’. again many nail holes hid to be spackled before the paint process began. The walls were painted a butter yellow with all trim in an antique white. New chrome plumbing _ fixtures were added to the tub and we liked the chrome for its shine and durability. | also found it gave the tub an understated elegance. If you're louking for less shiny faucets you may want to try a brushed chrome with a matte finish. Be careful, how- ever, when choosing faucets. These alone can double your renovation costs. Shop around for the best selection of styles and finishes. Your plumber is a good source for igh quality and good value fixtures. ; Once we were happy with the tub and had finished the. painting of the bathroom walls we — or I should say I — began the decorating. Constricted to a very tight budget (not by choice), I began. The first thing to do was to hang a black metal mirror over the cub. The existia: medicine cabinet would suf- fice for storage and the: sink’ was quite usable. We replaced the toilet and. hung some chrome towel racks and rings on the walls. In the guest room we con- tinued the use of the butter ' yellow with the white trim. A ~ simple white bed spread com- .'” plemented with butter yellow organza pillows now sits cen-' tral in the room. A white lamp was’ purchased to’ sit. on. a, white coffee table and: the: room now has a very cozy and a bright look. Now that we are, dori - , what's next, you say?
