_ 24-Neath Shore Riews - Friday, October 73. 2000 Duo performed at Dobro fest . From Page 23 we've basically been playing together ever since.” Performing in a rock band became less appealing as their . . own material developed. “We _just got fairly tired of playing in bars and the more we did this acoustic stuff realized that we could actually do this and not starve.” : Zubot’s primary instru- ments are violin and mandolin while Dawson works from an + assortment of guitars. “My “main one is an Hawaiian slide | guitar. The one I've got is sort : ofa knock -off of a “ Weissenborn-style guitar > which i is the name of the guy - modern ‘vecording of thése historical ‘Works. They're like an acoustic guitar except they have a really large hollow neck and you play it on your lap.” Dawson plays Hawaiian slide on about half the sengs — but there are also lots of surprises in store for listeners. On “Tolina,” off their new CD, Zubot plays a $15 read- side synth as well as mandolin, tremolo fiddle and violin sec- tion. Other musicians help out on the disc including Cap College jazzman Brad Turner. In concert, Zubor and Dawson almost always play as a trio, bringing in Marlow Hoider on bass. “On our new ‘CD he plays more of a rote,” says Dawson. “On the first albura we just sort of threw it on as a laver. Since we've been playing live together we real- ized that was a real part of the sound.” For their performance at Cap College. Zubot and Dawson will aiso bring along percussionist Jean Martin. “We've never played with him before — we decided we wanted to have that element of suspense — because we don’t really know what's going to happen. It’s probably the only time we'll play with this configuration in Vancouver.” During the summer, Zubot and Dawson travelled to Eastern Europe to perform at the annual Dobro festival. “We got back about pve on aseseomaere ts Geers weeks ago from Slovakia. Ir was amazing. It’s like a whole different planet. The festival we played at was close to Bratislava which is about half'an hour from Vienna. The difference between those two places is amazing. Slovakia hasn’t real- ly gotren on its feet yet as far as the econoniy is concerned. There's nuclear power plants all over the place and the cities are fairly run down. They're just starting to figure stuff out like how to put on music festivals — stuff that we take for granted.” Zubot and Dawson rarely perform in Vancouver, mak- . ing this 'a rare opportunity ; for fans te catch them live.
