MAIL Box Horse Long-term planning manure jacking in West Van fouls trails Dear Editor: Is horse manure more acceptable than dog poop? Come and find out in Bridgeman Park on East Keith Road. There are heaps galore on the paths of leftovers from horses. I bet there isn’t anoth- er park in Greater Vancouver where horse riders are allowed to pass 2 few metres away from an established playground for small children. How about the mothers who bring along their offspring in buggies or the older people from the highrise next door who have to step over this disgusting mess? What is the district council * thinking about to let this hap- pen? Small children, pedesti- ans on narrow paths don’t mix with horses whose hooves can be a lethal weapon under cir- - cumstances, Then there is the other aspect — 99% of dog owners clean up, but the riders leave it. I wish, with may other people who comment on this, that the _ example - of ‘Bowen Island * would be followed. On ail their - trails are posters “No Horses!” There ‘must be bridie paths elsewhere for riders where they are not a nuisance and endan- er others. - . Norcliffe North Vaticouver Dear Editor: Sunday’s editorial (July 16), Not in West Van, not only hit the proverbial nail on the head with a hammer, but did it with a sledge-hamimer. Analyzing the matter in further depth, it becomes apparent that what is missing is the ele- ment of master planning. Actually this not only applies to West Vancouver, but to the North Shore, Greater Vancouver and the province at large. Thrown into the matrix and further compli- cating the issue are too many miniscries and other authorities, each jealously guarding their own litde box of marbles without any cohesive overall authority and unification. West Vancouver council will teil you, “Oh, but we do have a master plan and it is called the Official Community Plan.” This plan, although it has some updates, is still dated May 1988, and in paragraph 5.1., quite clearly states that it is for day-to-day operational decisions, annual pro- gramming and budgeting, and for “short term planning.” So where is the long-term master plan which should cover, five-, 10-vear planning stages and cven 25-year predictions? It further states in paragraph 5.3a, “The Official Community Plan will be formally and thorough- ly reviewed at intervals of approximately 5 years.” When was this last done? Diligently watching council meetings on television, [ feel frustrated at the amount of time that council spends on such matters as how many dogs are permitted on a leash, and what they might do at lamp posts and fire hydrants. Finally, after years of neglect, Coun. Jean Ferguson is taking a lead in initiating the rejuve- nation of a long-term plan. Let us hope that this will result in better decisive leadership and stew- ardship which the citizens of West Vancouver hopefully will appreciate, even if it does step on some people’s tocs, causing them to squeal NIMBY. Donald L. Thomas West Vancouver Judgment day will come Dear Editor: What kind of society are we developing in this country over the last decades? We . have adults and young adults refusing to take responsibility for their own actions. We have Morgentaler spouting inanities about aborting unwanied babies and that is why crime has gone down in this country. We have women who shout choice but cannot make that cheice before hav- ing sex. We have our govern- ment spending more of our tax dollars to protect a group of physicians because some “crazy” out there has or may attack them. They chase to be abortionists or perhaps to be more politically correct, “abortion providers.” They can well afford to pay for their own protection. Because abortion is legal, as it is continually drummed into us by pro-chcice adva- cates and the media, docs not make it right or true. According to the law and our courts, pre-born babies are not persons, but then not long, ago women and blacks were not persons cither. Now we have Mr. Petter (Attorney General and = Minister Responsible for Human Rights} pandering to the Gay Alliance and spending moie of our taxes to challenge the law on marriage. Heaven help us all when we must -account for what we are doing to a much higher authority whom we will all surely meet one day.
