north shore news Curd urban tree choppi Dear Editor: _ As my husband and I were at a conven- tion in Whistler we received a call from my sister who was house-sitting. She said; “Your neighbour is cutting the old forest between the two properties,” and asked: 1. Is that iegal? 2. Doesn’t he need a permit ? 3. Did they tell you this was happening? There are huge branches falling into the yard and one hit the roof and did some damage. Fortunately none of the kids were in the area, The only answer I had was for the third question: No, we didn’t know that was going to happen. I told her that I would make some inquiries to see what could be done. - F called West Vancouver municipal hali and to my disappointment discover that yes, it’s Segal to cut trees on your property unless there is a creek near by and that you don’t need any permit for this. . St was sad to come up the driveway and see the treeline had disappeared and instead we had this view of a brutal clear cut. Who could have imagined this could MAIL BOX happen in West Vancouver or in any urban area! We had an opportunity to alk to the tree cutting company as well as the neigh- bour. The neighbours told us they had decided to cut the mrees so they could look at the srars with their telescope; the compa- ny said that they would be repairing the damage to our home. To date, the debris has been cleaned but the damage to our home, although not severe, has not been addressed. Aside from the obvious insult to our home environment a much greater issue should be raised by this unfortunate inci- dent. The residents of North Vancouver District, Vancouver and many other munic- ipalities need permits to cut their trees. What are we waiting for? There are still rrees in West Vancouver but not for long if there is no protection for them. We shouldn’t wait till it’s too late to save our forest and who knows it could be your neighbour next time. Yes, I can plant some trecs around my house but I will nor live long enough to sec them the way ! so enjoyed looking out my kitchen window, 1 understand there are trees that need to come down bur there are environmentally sensitive ways to do it. Of all community and public endeav- ours, the care and conservation of nature is the most important. Withour a healthy environment there is no probability for human development as neither the physical, spiritual, nor intellect will be fully expressed. Brewing, as a cottage industry in New France, was established well before 1668. On Aug. 14, 1655, Pierre Denys de ia Ronde bought a small brewery in Quebec and still operated it when he hired one of my family’s ancestors on Sept. 3, 1656.
