November 6, 1998 — North Shore News Clay nude a touchy Katharine Hamer Contributing Writer IF you want to show art work in public spaces on the North Shore, make sure it’s incon- spicuous. That's the lewon recently learned by Helle Simonsen, ano art teacher at) Handsworth Secondary School in North Vancouver. Simonsen, who is ale a painter and sculptor, entered her work in an art show at North Vancouver City Hall in September. The Stadio 44 exhibition was organized by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council and the North Vancouver school district's Artists tor Kids progeam. Teachers trom across the school district were invited to submit pieces. “We always put our students’ work on, se ws sometimes kind of fun to exhibit our own work,” said Simonsen. She decided to submit a life-size ceramic sculpture she had just completed. She could not have anticipated the controversy that “sould fol low. The sculpture is of a nude woman, The piece was only ar othe show for a week betore Simonsen was asked to remove ber work trom display following various “complaints.” Simonsen was stunned. How, she wondered, could anvone be offended by her work? There were other nude portraits in the exhibition, including nwo full frontal pastel drawings of 4 man and a woman. No complaints were received about these pieces. “Maybe it was the size (of the sculpture)” Sinionsen speculates. “You couldn't miss it. ft was obviously just too shocking for the public.” Simonsen said she has exhibited in several group shows betore, and never experienced this sort of problem. “Tdon't know why people are so conserva live out here,” she said. ‘YP used ta five in Montreal, and people there wouldn't blink an eve if they saw a nude sculpture. P guess there's just a different culture on the West Coast.” Simonsen also points out that pude statues are “everywhere on the streets of Europe. Nurses’ action curtailed Katharine Hamer Contributing Writer B.C. nurses did an about-face on job action last Sunday, lifting their work- to-rule campaign at midnight. The B.C. Nurses Cnion (BCNU) said the move was made because some health-care emplovers were threatening to stop nurses and other‘health-care employees: from reporting to work on Monday morning. The result would effectively have been a lock- out of nursing staff, BCNU President Cathy Ferguson accused employers of overreacting to the nurses’ job action. Nurses began work-to-rule action on Oct. 24, limiting their responsibilities to direet patient care. An overtime ban was implemented last week- end, but was lifted after only eight hours when nurses reached an agreement with the Health Employers Association of B.C. on key non-mon- clary issues. However, Ferguson said some employers con- tinued with a reduction in services, including the closure of beds and cancellation of surgeries. These employers were also pianning to. send home non-essential staff, including nurses, Lions Gate Hospital (GH) was not one of the employers attempting to restrict nurses. “We're very pleased that evervthing’s back to normal,” said LGH vice president of Human Resources Uli Haag. “We hope that the rest of the issues are resolved at the bargaining table.” Dramatic new home designs and spectacular locations just released!
