# -- Wednesday, August 5, 1998 - North Shore News Travellers took ferry trouble in stride | Catherine Barr Contributing Writer FRIDAY’S ferry failure spelled frustration for hundreds of travellers as B.C.’s busiest weekend got off to a slow start. The Queen of Cowichan broke down carly Friday morn- ing due to generator problems. This meant that the 6:30 a.m. sailing from Nanaimo, and sub- sequently the 8:30 a.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay had to be canceled. What followed was of long line-ups and thr ing delays as travellers waited for the problem to be fixed. The Queen of Esquimalt, which had been standing by in Tsawwassen, was brought in to help alleviate volume. Burt even by 2 p.m., the 3.4 kilometre ferry line-up stretched almost all the way back to West Vancouver's Caulfeild exit. Patrolling police constables reported that, in general, trav- elers were taking thing in stride. George and Claudia Stern, who were visiting from Florida, seemed to understand. “I guess they break,” said George Stern who had a two-hour wait despite the fact he had booked reservations. “I hope it doesn’t happen too often.” Other families in line echoed the sentiment as they resigned themselves to their fate. "The Weiss family was more than prepared with a portable television-VCR unit for three kids. Buc John Clint, an indepen- dent trucker from Ladysmith, was less than amused. He said that his four- hour delay was costing him business. He also thought it unfair that prices increased when traveling on long weekends. The extra S60 surcharge meant that a round trip for him and his sig would now cost over $450. Terminal: manager Dave Elliot spoke about the proh- lems. “We've missed two round trips of the Cowichan,” he said. But estimates that the Queen of Cowichan would SUMMER. return to service later Friday afternoon did not come to pass. This meant that only three ferries, instead of four, were available for the rest of Friday. The 6 p.m. sailing from SALE Chomicats Ben Supplies alt.on sale!
