Ina country that is supposedly “free” ‘ after years of rule by armed forces, a lawyer, . Gerardo, has been appointed to a presiden- ‘tial commission to investigate the worst of the previous regime’s crimes. How the commission will operate, where “it will be “allowed” to shed light and what it _ will achieve remain nebulous. Will she exact violent revenge? Is she justi- _fied in her actions ifhe is guilty? What if he is innocent? What more can she lose than she has lost already? . Pragmatism has replaced Gerardo’s you idealism. Indeed, while he has cared for and nursed his wife back to a semblance of physical and mental health, his treatment of her occasionally parallels the patriarchy of the state. Yet both profess love for each other despite betrayals, ancient and present. - T's a fascinating relationship that Paul Kloegman and Nancy Ebert are only begin- ning to explore, Ebert comes closest to cap- turing the emotional duress under which the play is performed but early humor and the short-hand of a long-term relationship are never established before the extremity of the situation forces change. The third point of the triangle is Richard Strachan’s Roberto who, to be blunt, strug- gled more in his head than in his ropes opening night. To be afraid for one’s life requires belief in the threat and, to be fair, a believable threat. It is axiomatic in stage acting that one can only play what one is given. This is a play that will, and should, change subtly every night. It is supremely difficult material that will challenge these three experienced and skillful actors every performance. I look forward to seeing this production at festival, too. And it certainly looks fabulous. The detail in the stonework, the painting of the flag- stones, the lighting design all attest to the comnutment Deep Cove Stage makes to its festival entry every year. — miller@nsnews.com ‘2 .99* Aa = os om KIDZ BIZ:* KIDZ RIZKIDEBIZ + KIDZ BIZ-* KIDZ:BIZ # AID?
