Without a sure and certain belief in the worth of the endeavor to sustain the artists there can be a very harsh lesson in economics waiting to smack the smiles off aspiring actors. directors and play- wrights. Four prod ctions held over PRESENTATION HOUSE has put together four solid nights of Fringe festival holdovers for North Shore theatre-lovers. An added bonus is that there are no gratuitous naughty bits in any of the titles. Each night features separate admission to two shows at the cost of $8 each (Fringe tickets were generally $9), or you can see both shows for $14. A better deal yet is four shows for $20. Joan Macleod’s jewel, ari affecting tale of love, grief and letting go, kicks off tonight at 7 p.m., followed at 9 p.m. by The Only Living Father, a one-person show based on the life of Newfie premier Joey Smallwood. Thursday is office day. At the Watercooler (7 p.m.) features some of the funny folk who brought us The World's Greatest Guy, while Girls in The Office (9 p.m.) contrasts office, union and feminist politics. Regular Theatre B.C. goers will remember that Joanna M. Glass’ poignant play (Friday at 7 p.m) was a regular at many festi- vals. Nevertheless it is a powerful play done weil and, by all accounts, Novus Theatre do very weil. Pinter‘s The Lover (see review) plays Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. while Charles Ludlum’‘s campy Stage Blood should be an interesting close to a varied and challenging four days of theatre. ah 4 ndi “Tandoori and Curries our Sp Special Opening Offer Yo OFF (fand only) with this ad Expires Sept. 30 < ney: A eci OUR SEAFOOD SPECIALS ARE TOO GOOD TO GET AWAY... | TERIYAKI SALMON Dinner Includes your choice of rice or $ Potatoes, vegetables and hot sourdough bread Sea Mate SEAFOOD RESTAURANT alty alt menu items, lunch or dinner Open F days id with en other offe s << —— os — o- Yr ae As few as five performances of oe * . | a production allows litle time for NIA 980-1213 998 Marine Drive N. Sa a life after the Fringe is a welcome opportunity for sore shows to expand their audience base and cover some costs. Even without the economic fac- tor, there is a sense of attaining quantifiable success when per- formers can say “We held over.” A hold-over can also afford the harried Fringe audience a second chance to see a show that was missed in the frantic, coffee- fuetled chase from line-up to line- up that is the quintessential Fringe experience. While the shows selected to run at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre are all worthy of support if you missed them, North Shore theatre-gcers can get a taste of the Fringe experience without crossing the waiter this year courtesy of Presentation House. This pro-active programming by the new theatre administration is to be applauded and, judging by the standards set by The Lover, can be confidently recommended. @ The Lover: This taut and torrid tale by Harold Pinter receives an immensely intelligent production from actors Gerard Plunkett, Lee Van Paassen and director Nicholas Tattersall. Van Paassen will always live in my memory for another Fringe moment — her brave and stun- ning rendition of Molly Bloom (under, not coincidentally, See Surprises page 40 star sapphires and many others.
