Next Friday marks the ninth
anniversary of the introduction of
cellular service in Canada. To
date, approsimately 1.5 million
Canadians currently owo cellular ,
phones, and that number is
expected to more than double by
the year 2000.

Canada has the longest contin-
uous cellular corridor in the world
— from Windsor, Ontario, to the
tip of New Brunswick.

The following are some helpful
cellular phone usage tips:
¢ Safe driving is your first priority
— always buckle up. keep your
hands on the wheel and your eyes
on the road ahead.

* Make sure your phone is posi-
tioned where it is easy to see and
easy to reach. Familiarize yourself
with the operation of your phone
while your vehicle is stationary.
Practice until you feel comfortable
operating it.

* Use a hands-free microphone
when using your phone while dri-
ving. This allows you to keep both
hands oi the wheel. Ensure the
microphone is installed to maxi-
mize sound quality. [f you will be
using a portable phone in your
vehicle, have a hands-free unit
instatied,

° Use the specd-dialling feature on
your phone ‘to lacilitate dialling
with the push of only two or three
buttons. Most phones will store up

The Cellular Sense Campaign,
sponsored by Cantel and Mobility
Canada, marks the fourth year
Canada’s cellular carriers have
worked together to promote cellu-
lar safety.

A national poll in £993 found
approximately 50% of cellular
customers had used their phones
to report accidents, suspicious
activities and other emergencies.
Both Cantel and Mobility Canada
sponsor awards programs to rec-
ognize some of these “Cethuiar
Samaritans.”

The majority of cellular pur-
chasers cite personal safety as a
major factor in their decision to
buy a phone.
