C~ ® NVC puts squeeze on sandwich board signs SANDWICH BOARDS — those signs perched on side- walks by shopkeepers seck- ing to lure.customers in the docr — are a colorful addi- tion to the street for most pedestrians. NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL by Stephen Wisenthal But for the visually impaired, the signs can turn a sidewalk into a dangerous obstacle course. North Vancouver City ceuncil resolved at its meeting Monday to fix the problem. Staff proposed a policy that would restrict the placement of sandwich boards to no more than four feet (1.3 m) from a shop, There would be a limit of one four-foot (1.3 m) high by 2.5-foot (0.8 m) wide sign per store. Council voted unanimously to refer the plan to the North Shore Advisory Committee on Disubility issues, the North Shore Chamber of Commerce and the Advisory Design Panel for comment. “T personally think that the sign boards should be right close to the building. Anyone that is walking down the street and is visually im- paired, at least he or she has the edge of the sidewalk,’’ said Coun. Stella Jo Dean. Coun. Barbara Perrault said she was giad to see council addressing the issue. ‘dt really affects small business ° people. For some of them, it’s the only way they can.afford to get their message out,’’ said Perrault. Coun. Bill Bell said he wants shopkeepers and visually impaired people to meet so they can under- stand each ctber’s concerns. ‘T would hope that once we go through with this process and be- fore passing the bylaw we have some kind of public meeting,”’ said Bell. syrup, oven baked beans with panfried potatoes.
