Dalton, the newly appointed Opposition attorney-general
critic, said he supports the provincial government’s policy

- regarding assisted suicide.

“My personal opinion is that
this policy is good. It clears up
some of the legal gray areas and
confusion surrounding this very
sensitive matter,"’ said Dalton.

He added that he hopes the
government's. announcement will
stimulate public debate on the
issue of euthanasia and, assisted

suicide, with the goal of en-
couraging the federal government
to change the Criminal Code to
allow for assisted suicides in cer-
tain limited cases.

“The issue of euthanasia is a
very personal matter. 1 believe
there will be cases where the
public interest should be consid-

be laid when an intent to end life
can be proved and when charges
are in the public interest.

Charges are less likely to be laid
when an action is undertaken to
ease pain and suffering.

Dalton also said he will per-
sonally lobby the federal govern-
ment to change the Criminal Code
provisions.
