It appears that there are many misconceptions about the nature of co-ops, and off-the-wall com- ments like ‘‘why don’t we go out and just get a major prison built’’ are indications that some people have preposterous notions about co-ops ~- or maybe just a hidden agenda. For the record, co-op com- munities are comprised of 70% residents who pay market rents, and 30% who pay rent geared to income. Socially, members repre- sent a mix of families. Co-op members are typically people who volunteer on school committees, form Neighborhood Watch, Block Parent and recycl- ing programs, and work to main- tain and improve quality of life in and around their development. And co-ops have the right to ter- minate the membership of anyone who does not comply with the rules or who becomes a nuisance neighbor. Co-ops interview and screen all prospective members and generally attract people who feel strongly about community. And because co-op members work together, they build a strong community within the development; an at- tribute sadly lacking in our urban environment. At the moment, it seems that the proposed development is the scapegoat for teen social problems and overcrowded schools in a community that is experiencing and concerned about growth. Speaking on behalf of the pro- posed co-op, we would prefer to work with the community on these issues and become part of the solution, rather than be targeted as the problem.
