Today was no exception and being seniors we tend to walk a litle slower then oth- ers. However, again today as twice in the past, my husband was clipped in the ankles by one of Those large-sized dou- ble child’s stroller being pushed by the mother. This accident really hurt the ten- dons of my husband's ankle and we had to return home. I am sure his leg will bruise. The seawall is for walking and not for baby strollers, especially those very large double ones. We find that more and more of those “vehi- cles” are‘ appearing on our sidewalks and causing many difficulties for pedestrians. The West Vancouver council has banned skateboarding, bicycles, and skating on the seawall and we think that the council should review this as another unsate obstacle, These strollers are much too large for our sidewalks and should be banned or regulated by a spe- cial licence fee! Maybe then our walks will return to a much safer activity for all to enjoy. Mr. and Mrs. Sean Allan West Vancouver Wondering about bridge widths Dear Editor: We now know that the government will reconstruct and rehabilitate the Lions Gatc Bridge and the causeway for $99.8 million. The project will include a. new deck, widened lanes for vehicles, peopic and bicycles. / Tragically the government failed to convince the Vancouver Park Board that their idiotic stance on the arks environment was fool- hardy. Imagine: the bridge will have three 5.9-metre-wide Janes totalling 58.12 feet. The causeway will have three 3.0- metre-wide lanes totalling Now you can own a Nokia 918 29.52 feet. Think of the tun- nel effect as you come off the peak of the span and see 58.12 fect narrowing into 29.52 feet. Now coming home from Vancouver it could be quite pleasant. F13- 0335 Dear Editor: Hana Mercer's April, 30 column (Teaching right: trom wrong) asks for an answer to the recent youth killings in Littleton and new Tabor. Unfortunately, her answer lies close to home. I's true that “our moral and intellectual refativism,” and “lack of moral absolutes is offensive” because it is subject to change, and it provides no definition of right and wrong The answer is close to home. In 1977, psychologists S. Yochelson and S. Samenow published their 17-year study The Criminal Personality and concluded that the cause of crime couldn't be traced to environmental factors such as poverty or oppression, but rather wrong moral choices. The answer, they said, is a con- version of the wrong-doer toa nore responsible — lifestyle. Principle one: responsibility for one’s actions. In 1987, criminologists J. Wilson and R. Hernstein con- cluded in their Crime and Human Nature study that the cause of crime proper moral training, and development of conscience during the formative ycars of one through six. Principle two: moral training and devel- opment. From = my profession and training as a language teacher/linguist, it is remark: able that the same years a child’s moral conscience is was a lack of being formed, his/her lan- guage ability is likewise form- ing. ff a chit does receive the necessary language stimu- lus, the child will never devel- op a socially acceptable lan- guage. Thus, vou have a feral or wild child who is linguisti- cally incorrigible. Theretore, just as children need language input to receive the gitt of han: uuave, likewise children need the input of moral values to torm the gilt of conscience without which they will never be socially acceptable. Perhaps then, like the feral child incapable of speech, the child without the stimulus of right and wrong is incapable of drawing moral distinctions — or controlling their pas- sions and impulses. So where does begin? In the living roca. At home. When parents do not spend time with their children, crime and model for them morality and character, you have the beginnings of social misbehav- Tour. Maybe the child will never #o On 3 shooting rampage, but other equally evil acts can be donc in fess public places than a school, Pavehiatrist, S20 Fratburg states that when there is a lack of parent-child relationship, there can be ne consciene. Furthermore, psychologist: R. Hernstein says shallow emo- tional attachments are the cause of much of the random violence by adolescents. The solution to crime is not in Ottawa, nor in the cor- rectional institutes they create, and surely not in our political- ly correct educational institu- dons, but at home with the security of the family and the modelling of respect, love and dignity that is nurtured there.
