FIRST LET me say that I had a wonderful time in Ot- tawa. Joy Metcalfe | JOY TELLS ALL My flight on Canadian Airlines couldn't have been made more en- joyable by PR man Mike Dukelow, my stay on the Entree Gold Floor in CP’s lovely marble mansion, the Chateau Laurier, couldn’t have been more pleasant, and even the weatherman co- operated beautifully with 23° sun- shine. it was a great lead-in to Friday evening’s gala black-tie premiere at the National Arts Centre of the touring production of The Phan- tom of the Opera, which stars Vancouver’s own Jeff Hyslop and Broadway’s Patti Cohenour. It was indeed a very festive af- fair, beginning with a champagne reception, a buffet dinner, the spectacular production, an aftcr- the-show party with decadent desserts, an auction and a dance. it was during the buffet that I slipped upstairs to have a sit-down dinner with Jeff and his actress- wife, Ruth Nichol, and their daughter, Gemma, his co-star Patti Cohenour and her husband, Tom, director Hal Prince, Li- veEnt’s Garth Drabinsky and the rest of the cast and crew. Didn’t get back to the hotel to well after 1 a.m. and flew home the next morning! It was a fun trip and an absolutely fabulous production! And all of the hard-to-please eastern critics seem to agree! The result launched one of the best displays yet organized by Bob Scragg, the IFA ball chairman. West Van's Judy Smith was responsible for collecting and presenting 200 items that were bid upon in (wo silent and one live auction, conducted by Van- couver’s indefatigable auctioneer, Barry Scott. He also sold two season tickets and a place in his personal box at the games this season. The “Ride the Orient Express, B.C. Style,’ which was a trip for two in a private rail car on the Royal Hudson, catered by Erwin Doebeli’s William Tell Restaurant and hosted by MLA Grace Mc- Carthy and me had some furious bidding, I’m told, and was finally won by The Pez for $1,600. Ball-park figure for the fund- raiser is $70,000 and everyone, especially the more than 100 vol- unteers, is very pleased! ... At the Hotel Vancouver on Saturday evening, it was the se- cond annual Black and White Ball with this year’s double theme — In Celebration of Stanley Park and A History of Entertainment in Vancouver. The entire B.C. Ballroom was converted into a mini-Stanley Park under the chairmanship of Lele ffathisen and supervised jointly by Rebecca Mackay and Cartier’s Ani Feuermann and their tireless committee. Southlands Nursery supplied the live trees for the centrepieces, enhanced by blooms from The Flower Shop. Everyone received a disposable camera and each took home a live seedling. A backdrop from the original Matkin Bowl, painted by artist David Rogers, created the perfect setting for show tunes by TUTS vetersis, Charlene Brandolini and Dean Regan. It was an especially gratifying evening for honored guests, Mr. and Mrs. Richardson Malkin. Hugh Pickett introduced the act while Michael Campbell acted as the emcee.
