November 21. 1999 New mayors elected in West Van, NV District MAYORS-clect, Mark and Murray will preside over civic polities in the districts of West and North Van- couver for the next three years, North Shore yoters decided in Saturday's municipal elections. By Surj Rattan News Reporter Newly-elccted West) Vancouver District Mayor Mark Sager, who easily defeated three other mayoral candidates Saturday, said formulating a program to control the size of buildings in the municipalit- will be the first job for the new West Vancouver Council. Meanwhile, Murray Dykeiman, who also defeated three challengers to capture the mayor’s cheir in North Vancouver District, said the rate of growth in the district will be a main priority for his new council. North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks was returned to of- fice for his seventh term, the sixth by acclamation. Loucks said that this term will likely be his last as the city’s mayor. The mayoral victories of Sager and Dykeman contained smany similarities: both were incumbent aldermen who decided to seek the maycr’s job in their respective districts after the incumbent mayors decided not to seek re- election in municipal politics; and both were challenged Uy three other candidates. In addition both incumbent West Vancouver Mayor Don Lan- skail and incumbent North Van- couver Distric Mayor Marilyn Baker threw their support behind the candidates who will now take over their mayoral chairs. Sager, who defeated his neurest rival, Brice Macdougall. by 4,086 votes, said he had been optimistic that he would win the municipali- ty’s top political job. “Tr was a hard-fought cam- paign. (But) there were poins in the campaign that [ felt TI was not happy with," said Sager. During the campaign, Sager charged that he had been the vic- tim of a political smear campaign by some Miacdougall supporters. But representatives oF the Mac- dougall camp have denied that there was any allenipt to smear Sager.
