(ICBC), has dismissed a North Vancouver woman’s suggestion that the Crown corporation begin releasing information on the history of used vehicles. By SURJ RATTAN News Reporter Joan his made the suggestion after she was involved in an acci- dent in a 1984 Dodge Caravan that she had purchased from a North Vancouver car dealership last summer. The October accident damaged the van’s front end. lus was later cleared of all blame and given the go-ahead by ICBC to have the van repaired. But the repair shop she took the vehicle to told her the van had been involved in a previous accident and that the repair work done to it was ‘‘ques- tionable.”’ “The body shop we took our car to had to call in ICBC as they were also not clear as to what was old damage and what was new dam- age,’’ said lus. ‘It was a? this point that we found out the car was in a major accident before we bought it.” ICBC eventually paid for the damage done to the car, including paying for repair work to the frame of the van, which was dam- aged in a previous accident. Tus said when she went back to the dealership to find out why they had not told her the van had been Solicitor-General Russ Fraser «CBC won't release used car in- formation. involved in an accident before she bought it, she said they told her the previous owner did not tell them about the accident. ICBC, she said, should therefore make the history of used vehicles available to prospective buyers. But Fraser maintained it is not ICBC’s responsibility to release that information. “The corporation will release the history (of a vehicle) if the new owner has the consent of the previous owner,” Fraser said. ‘‘If the answer is no, then that might raise your curiosity about buying the car. it’s buyer beware.’’ The owner of a vehicle that suf- fers more than $2,000 must report ENRICH YOUR FAMILY LIFE Host an overseas student. He also dismissed Ius’s sugges- tion that if ICBC began releasing information on the history of used vehicles and charged a fee, they could reduce insurance rates. “Every time there’s a snowfall in the city of Vancouver,”’ he said, ‘tit costs a million dollars in in- surance costs. If you (ICBC) did a $1,000 intake (in fees) it wouldn’t make an iota of difference (in ICBC rates). As a source of fund- ing, that is simply over-rated.”’ Fraser also said there are few requests from people for the histo- ry of used vehicles and maintained it is not ICBC’s responsibility to release such information. “That (history information) has nothing to do with ICBC,’’ he said. “If you want to get into that data, that would cost a lot of money. Who would pay for that? The government wouldn’t pay for that.” SQUAMISH A home & a yacht Ican be had for under $150,000 Paid advertising by The friend of Squamish Dundarave Terrace Prof. Bidg. 114-2419 Bellevue Ave. West Vancouver ob Collingwood School Country Hair Saturday, April 28, 1990 & Much Much More! 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Country Kitchen + Baking * Tea Room ” w& Food Fair-International * Burgers ‘n Dogs vr Treasure Chest x Bottle Stall | & Calico Crafts % Games & Entertainment’ vv Corner Store x Silent Auction w Raffle % New To You x Garden Shop & Bedding Plants vx Midway for Children poaved x Fun Galore SEE MAP ON RIGHT FOR COLLINGWOOD SCHOOL 70 MORVEN DRIVE WEST VANCOUVER 925-3331 SAVE ‘2000 * Auto © Power Steering & Brakes * Beauty Trim © Low Kms 89 MR2 SAVE ‘5000 * Demo © 5 Speed © T-type Sun Roof * Very Low Kms 89 COROLLA SEDAN HOW TO GET A GOCD DEAL WITHQUT GETTING BURNT.
