DILEMMA IN DENVER

In trouble with an airline? Phone the PR. agent

I RECEIVED a ’ lovely
thank-you letter yesterday.
“Dear Barb:

I can’t tell you how much r
appreciated all your help. I had
a very nice flight home — i

‘could get used to flying first
class. When you talk to Ross
thank him again for me.”

What happened to earn me the
thanks had little to do with me —
it was simply a matter of linking a
stranded passenger with the right,
person at the right airline. The fact
that both people are personal
friends had nothing to do with it.

Karen had booked a Continental
Airline flight from New Jersey to
Vancouver. She was obliged to
change planes in Denver — a
hell-hole of an airport if I’ve ever
seen one.

Somehow, Continental lost her
reservation in the computer which
flustered Karen, who was sent
scrambling around the airport to
make aliernative arrangements.

In her hurry, she Jost her tickets.
Llutching wn empty envelope, she
watched as her plane departed.

At great expense, she finally got
home from Denver, but her return
ticket to New Jersey was soime-
where in a scrap heap in Denver
airport.

Fortunately for Karen and
everyone else flying Continental,
the new district sales manager for
Canadz, is Ross Ireland. And, for-
tunately for me, Ross is a dear
friend.

I cailed Ross.

Ross phoned Karen and within a
few minutes had the problem
straightened out. In addition, Ross
arranged fo have her flowa home
first class.

He also promised me that this
was no ‘special favor’’ between
friends — Continental has em-
barked on one of the most user-
friendly policies of any airline.

So, if you fly. Continental sad
anything gleeps, call Ross at 264-
1032. He may kill me for this, but
if airlines have customer service
-pcticies, it’s nice to know who to
call to enforce them,

I’m suie¢ he can’t guarantee an

- upgrade to first class, but I'd be

willing to bet he’d take a run at it
if space were available. Mean-
while, he'll make you a happy
camper, even in Denver.

I have one piece of advice for
anyone, flying any airline, who
runs into a snag.

Deal with the desk clerks — but
briefly. If they can’t sort out the
probiem, do your best to ‘speak

with the person in charge of public.

airlines, which is probdably odd
since I fly around a bit. -

The first made me thankful I’m
