Arts council honors architect

NORTH VANCOUVER architect
Joseph Cantafio has a long list of
community involvement — from
being a driving force behind
Waterfront Park’s sculpture to
working for a North Shore
gateway at the north end of the
Lions Gate Bridge.

In honar of those and other
community efforts, Cantafio was
recently awarded the North Van-
couver Community Arts Council's
Award of Merit.

“Certainly [| didn’t expect it,
but | was very pleased, ” said
Cantafio, whose involvement with
the arts council goes back six
years. “You don’t think about
awards, you think about achieving
things together.’”

While working with ihe arts
council on a contest for the
Waterfront Park sculpture, Can-
tafio hit upon the idea for a con-
certed effort to turn the north end
of the Lions Gate Bridge into a fit-
ting gateway to the North Shore.

“What | personally enjoy is any
improvement in the quality of life
on the North Shore,’’ said Can-
tafio, who puts his age on the
mature side of 39.

“I've long been very happy as
a resident on the North Shove. |
like to see it evolve, the emphasis
put on the cultural aspects of life.”’
