Talking with her, one senses a personality talent that runs much deeper than her physi- cal charms alone might suggest. ; The kind of DURABLE talent which Hef —- now seeking a serene “September”’ to his life after his mild 1985 stroke — may never have met during his high summer of love, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Yarults gan. Ip ie becomes a necessity as communities grow, the easiest development route — in this case wholesale clear cut- ting — is not the best. Planners and municipal deci- sion-makers are being short-sighted in allowing this practice to continue, as the damage done to the com- munity may take years to repair. Much of West Vancouver's beauty is its surroun- dings; contributing to the overall majesty of the. area, the trees are the backbone of the municipality’s splen- dor. Clear cutting leaves ugly gaping holes in the fand- scape; when houses are built, the gaping holes turn in- te barren, unattractive subdivisions. Residents in these new neighborhoods will lament the lack of proper green space, and pressure the municipality for. parks and beautification projects. It is far more efficient and cost-effective to incorporate green space and treed lots into the initial plan than it is to add such things after the project is complete. Selective cutting and a sympathetic planning strategy will avoid the development eycsores, and create sub- divisions worthy of the srca. To preserve its picture-postcard surroundings and create a development to be proud of, West Vancouver must spend more time and money to work in concert with the environment — not against it.
