WHAT DO a group of Chinese
marching cadets, the Vancouver
Sea Festival and a Prince George
elementary school class have in
common?

All are working with ICBC to
tackle traffic safety issues in their
communities.

Throughout BC, representatives
of the corporation’s Traffic Safety
Education department and local
volunteers plan programs tailored
to the needs of individual com-

munities.

On the North Shore, ICBC
Community Programs Manager
Joan Stephens sits on the
Municipal Affairs Committee of
the Chamber of Commerce and
liaises with the North Shore Safety
Council. Her assistant Bob Sum-
merbell works with secondary and
post-secondary school students and
local youth groups.

In addition to local initiatives,
there are several ICBC programs

currently underway in the pro-
vince, These include:

® Baby Click: Encouraging the
correct use of infant and toddler
seats through liaison with
hospitals, health units and public
health nurses.

® Elementary School Program:
Focusing on seat belt use, bicycle
and pedestrian safety through the
Captain Click seat belt program
and the Hogey and Friends road
safety program.

* Youth Leadership Program:
Encouraging teenagers to become
influential safety advocates by
working with their peers, younger
students and community groups.

increasing the seat belt wearing
rate of employees and their fami-
ies.

® Living Proof: Promoting seat
belt use by offering awards to
crash survivors who are living
proof that seat belts work.
