CAPILANO COLLEGE lues pl ace second im soccer tourney THE CAPILANO Col- lege Biues soccer team finished second in its pool in the North Shore’s first Capilano College Indoor Soccer Tournament. Hosted by the North Vancouver college at the Sutherland Secondary school gym, the Jan. 3 and 4 tournament involv- ed 16 Lower Mainland soccer teams from the Metro, Premier, Pacific Coast and Totem College Athletic Association soc- cer leagues. The Royal Gak Astors finished first overall in the tournament followed by North America Sports in second and Club Ireland in third. The Blues finished one point behind North America Sports in the team’s tournament pool after losing its opening game to North America 6-5. In the Blues’ second game, the Capilano Col- lege team demolished Squamish United 8-3. On Sunday, the Blues downed Academico 4-1. Blues coach Joe lacobellis, who organized the event, said the exper- imental tournament was a great success. “We had 21 applica- tions for the 16 team positions and everyone was very keen. I am con- sidering making it an an- nual event.”’ IN CELEBRATION of ringette’s 1lth anniversary in British Col- umbia, the North Shore Winter Club will host its second Inter- Provincial ‘‘A’’ Ringette Tourna- ment Feb. 5, 6, 7 and 8. Stuart was also voted the game’s most valuable player. In the second game, Langley was defeated by Yic’s 8-2. Stuart scored another two goals. Mario Pante also scored a pair. Yie’s Jeff Plican was voted the game’s most valuable player. In the semi-finals, Yic's blanked Richmond 3-0. Yic’s goaltender Frank Kristen blocked 26 shots to record the shut-out. A second period goal by Pat Sutherland, assisted by Wynn Griffiths, opened the scoring and two late third period goals by Stuart and Danny Mayers clinched the victory. Griffiths was the game’s most valuable player. The final game resulted in an exciting 5-4 overtime Yic’s victory over a persistent Kamloops team. With a 2-1 lead going into the third period on goals by Pante and Kevin Shepherd, Yic’s dropped behind in the game when Kamloops scored two quick goals to take a 3-2 lead. But goals by Stuart and Sutherland moved the North Van team back into the lead only to have Kamloops battle back with a power-play goal 40 seconds from full time to force the game into overtime. Green scored the garne winner unassisted at 2:50 into the first overtime period. Shepherd was voted the game’s most valuable player.
