/ Quitting smoking: NEWS photo Stuart Davis. not an easy task YF QUITTING smoking is one of. the good things you’re doing for yourself in 1986, congratulations. You’re ‘helping to keep British Columbia the pro- vince with the lowest smok- ing rate in.Canada and ad- ding years to your life in the process. Unfortunately, you may not be feeling par- ticularly good about. giving up the cigarette habit. As the chemicals in cigarette smoke and their drug effects leave the body, new nonsmokers may experience a variety of withdrawal symptoms in- ‘cluding dizziness, headaches, ‘shaking, mouth sores and a ‘spaced out’ feeling. But don’t worry — the symptoms are all temporary and are actually signs of re- covery, according to Shirley Thompson, . Smoking and Health Consultant for the . B.C. Lung Association. ‘The worst you could feel - is as though you have the flu," Thompson insists. If people can survive the first few weeks of not smok- ing, they are well on their way to staying quit for good — a major goal of the Association’s annual Cold Turkey Day, Jan. 22. ‘One | of the main barriers to stay- ing quit is the anxiety people experience over the idea of ‘living the rest of their lives without a ‘cigarette. They have to learn how to handle . situations as a nonsmoker,"” says Thompson. “ The Association offers several tips to -help - ex- smokers keep their resolve: Concentrate on not .§f smoking one day at a time; don’t look ahéad to next week or next month. eAnticipate’ when you might be tempted to light up . : and plan alternatives. Don’t substitute food for cigarettes. | © Use physical activity as a diversion. he *Practise deep breathing and relaxation techniques. ' eVisit nonsmoking friends and places. Reward yourself for not : smoking. | *Remind yourself your body is recovering and you'll soon feel better. 7 “If an individual is going / to start smoking again it's ’ usually within the, first six months after quitting,’’ says Thompson. The most com- mon reasons given for star- ting again are stress and social situations. To handle these pressures exsmokers are advised to change their lifestyles to avoid situations associated with smoking. More emphasis on physi-. ‘cal-and outdoor activities is’ also recommended. ‘‘Family and friends can also have a real impact on a person’s success or failure in staying off cigarettes,'’ says Thompson. Family members should be encouraging and recognize how difficult kick- ing the smoking habit can e Planning rewards is another key to quitting suc- cess. Some unique ideas are: sending yourself a con- gratulatory telegram, splurg- ing on ,some smal} luxury you normally forego, plann- ing a holiday, calling long distance to talk to an old friend, or preparing a can- dielight dinner for yourself. If there’s one key to quit- ting smoking successfully, it’s. attitude, says Thompson. Smokers who quit to please someone else will have trou- ble resisting the urge to light up again. : “They have to decide to make a positive choice not to smoke and not think they are depriving themselves. They have to believe that they are better able to cope in a stressful situation as a nonsmoker.”” Exsmokers say the hardest part about quitting smoking is staying quit. But they also say, without reservation, it’s worth the effort.
