Keep peace Canada first Dear Editor: Re: Establish Peace Tax, publica- tion date - North Shore News, Jan. ‘I Is this another proposal to give, - give, give? 1 don't mind giving, but I want my money to go to the CANADIAN old, sick and needy, not to the USELESS UNITED NATIONS, which incidently has néver been able to follow through with its original charter of keeping _. peace on Earth. The numerous ‘wars and genocide since its con- ception bear witness to that. As for aid to ‘other countries in need, it would seem to' me that . most of the people we send, money to are usually communist ‘or dic- tatorships in third world countries that, through mismanagenient or ’ because they have spent inore time, /money and energy in building up ‘their armics than seeing to their people’s needs and peaceful pur- /. $uits, have used up the resources » needlessly. One other note, jet us not be 50 naiveas to Canada’s role as a _-peacekeeper and. big brother. : Those roles are up to’ the countries with enough military might to im- pose peace on the uncaring, war- ‘mongering aggressor nations that don’t give'a damn for Canada’s, or. "any - other country’s, foreign policy on lifesaving and peace, just the' dollar, which is what, unfortu- nately, makes the -world. go around, not nobleminded, misguided sentiment. “However, if you can come up with a more realistic approach, ' Your Dreams” ’ at.the luxurious Aets Vancouver . with specific, concrete ways of at- taining this goal of world peace, then by all means, you have my ear. 1K. Freund North Vancouver 7 - Friday, Februury 7, 1986 - North Shore News Dear Editor: On behalf of M.A.D.D., Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Vancouver, North and West Van- couver Chapter, | would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters for giving us strength and encouragment in our continued work and fight against drunk drivers. We greatly appreciate the year round media coverage which cer- tainly adds to the awareness of the South Africa could be like Dear Editor: It is often argued that even though there is a complete lack of human rights provided to the blacks in South Africa, they are sull better off than blacks elsewhere in Africa. What this argument ignores is that South Africa has a vast min- eral wealth greater in value than all the oil wealth in the Middle East. With such valuable mineral wealth and huge profits resulting, com- panies can easily afford to pay black miners higher incomes than _ received elsewhere in poveriy stricken Africa, The point the blacks make is that the resources in South Africa could easily provide - all people, black and white, with incomes and a. lifestyle similar to that in Canada. But instead black incomes are about one tenth that of white workers doing similar work, One indisputable fact is that the black people have just as much right to share in the mincral wealth of South Africa as the white citi- zens. But the government is instead attempting to dispossess them en- tirely from this wealth. The main tool they are using is what is called the ‘homelands’ policy. The gov- ernment is resettling blacks in areas of South Africa that have no mineral wealth at all and then cail- ing these areas separate ‘‘coun- tries."" This way the South African government will have no obligation to provide any education, health care, or other social services to the blacks. This is because they say it is the responsibility of the separate “country” these blacks now live in, to provide these services even though these areas are devoid of resources to pay for them. This policy is such a blatant at- tempt to dispossess black people from any share of South Africa's mineral wealth that the black peo- ple will fight tooth and nail to pre- vent it. Most of the riots last year oc- curved where everyone in selected black communities were ordered to move to their assigned homelands ; thousands of miles away. When the people refused to move, soldiers were sent in to destroy their homes and force them out. One white soldier who recently moved to the U.S. described scenes such as biack children being shot as they stood with arms raised in surrender, and how he was at the helm of an armored vehicle as it rolled over huts filled with black families. It is no wonder that the country has exploded in civil war. The only hope now is that somehow the government there be forced to ac- cept that blacks are people entitled individual’s responsibility to deal with this social problem. Please make 1986 a safe one. If you want to drink, please stay home, hire a taxi or get a friend to drive you. Do not drink and drive. Think of the consequences: the risk is too great, the price is too high. Rita Akselrod President M.A.D.D. Vancouver, North and West Vancouver Chapter Canada to the same rights as whites in- | cluding the right to the same social services whites enjoy. If Canada can afford to provide all its people with decent health care, education and other social services then surely South Africa rich in gold, diamonds and other minerals can provide all of its population with the same.
