Is boredom giving you the
diet doldrums? Perhaps a
little knowledge can bring
some of the romance and
exotic allure back into our
daily lives. A little book I
discovered at the library,
Word Origins and _ their
Romantic Stories, by
Wilfred Funk (New York,
Inc., £950) did it for me.

Suppose that you stumble"

reach for the coffeepot.
According to Mr. Funk, you
are drinking, not just coffee,
but the Arab concoction
“qahwe”, discovered when a

certain shepherd noticed his |

the berries of a certain bush.

Mandarin Chinese, but the

“tay”). When English traders

name became corrupted to
“t e a.”

Perhaps you follow your
morning beverage with a
bowl of cereal. The name of
this food is derived from the
Roman goddess Ceres,
patroness of grain and the
harvest." Or perhaps you
treat yourself to a little
biscuit. This food is French
for “twice cooked,” and has
exactly the same meaning as
the German “zwieback.”

The romance of food
