A8 - Sunday, November 14, 1982 - North Shore News Sunshine Guy ‘cheap’ Dear Editor: Your “Sunday Brunch” has asked of us guys how we feel about the “Sunshine Guy” theme. I assure you, had I written what I felt even a week after first seeing that “tasteless smut’, even Penthouse wouldn't have been able to print it. ° What cheap, exploitive, sensationalism your paper has come up with in order to acquire women’s interest. I just bet, since Shawn has come on the :scene, every woman on the North Shore is now opening The News to page Sfirst. Pretty soon youll be wanting the next guy to undo the top 4 or 5 buttons of his shirt or even worse take it off completely. To The News I say, get us off page 5 and back in the bars where we belong. As for you ladies, we men are not sex objects, to be leered at, slobbered over, fantasized about or used as wallpaper on steno pool walls. I can only hope that the. “concerned woman's” gets on The News case. How about using a kitchen as a background for the next “Sunshine Girl”; that’s what Fd call descriptive jour- nalism R.E. With that in mind I respectfully draw your at- tention to a West Vancouver police spokesman’s threat (North Shore News, Nov. 7) that “People can expect to be stopped at random road blocks at any given time and any given place... In this taxpayer's $ opinion, such. bluster, together with its implementation, can have the effect only of adversely affecting public morale as well as creating barriers of resentment between nor- mally cooperative citizens and their servants, the police. My judgement stems from a random “Document Check” road block (2 police cars, 3 or 4 constables) at 4100 block Marine Drive, October 8, 12 noon-1 p.m.). Those stopped were neither malefactors nor even suspected persons, so that the arbitrary halting and examination of these law- iding citizens bound upon their useful business ap- peared to be -staged for the purpose of seeking to un- NLY. Without doubt humiliating and more in line with what one might expect to suffer in lands where freedom knows no cham- pion. I have not counsel as to the ultimate legality of an arbitrary police road block policy in times of peace, yet, all my instincts persuade me. that what is being done is not in accord with hard-won tradition: only when real emergency exists may armed con- stabulary halt innocent passing citizens and compel estionin: consulted Ss UN-t expectation of being ar- bitrarily halted and _ in- terrogated “at any time and — at any place”. And I have no doubt that the above quoted police spokesman’s pronouncement would have been both condemned and rejected by an_ earlier generation of West Van- couverites of pioneer stock as an unacceptable intrusion upon their right to travel the highways without let or hindrance.
