C6-Sunday News, October 5, 1980 Readers ask about Visa, Spain and Tengier Some of the letters I get from readers set me up for a day of laughs. Here is one I got a special chuckle from: Dear Barbara: I read with interest your with Visa over the hotel im Manhattan ANSWER: The hotel requested a credit card “for identification purposes”. They took mine, made an imprint and returned the card. At the time, I assured them that we had no in- tention of using my card to pay the bill. When the bill reached over $75 — which didn’t take long — the hotel called Visa to find out just how much I was good for. I assume that they told Visa that we were booked into the hotel for eight days. Someone calculated that the bill would be in the $500 range, so just to make sure that I wasn’t about to pull any fast moves, they processed the charge trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie just as if Id signed the voucher. We've often run into the same policy — that is, take a credit card and run an imprint, but it has never caused a problem before. That's because the cards we have used are ones with bigger credit limits than I allow myself. I wonder what would have happened if we didn’t have credit cards? Ever try to rent a car without one? P.S. I appreciated the “X X S’s” at the end of your letter. oe Another reader wants some information on clothing for Spain and Portugal in November. Ive been there in March which should work out to about the same thing. We found days to be in the 60 (F) range and while the sun was shining, we appreciated blazers or raincoats. Laundry services are excellent and cheap. eee The same reader enquired abouba visit to Tangier for a day. Go, by all means, but for a group of women, I'd recommend a guided tour. The hydrofoil from Algeciras costs a bit more than the ferry but is faster and far more comfortable, somewhat resembling the 4 interior of a jet plane. Wear heavy-duty walking shoes because the groups move at quite a clip. Anyone who cannot move fast weuld be advised to skip the trip. Don't even consider going if you are confined to a wheelchair. The streets are narrow, rough and hilly. Where there is traffic, it goes like the “milltails of hell” ignoring traffic signals. There are also two and three day tours which will take you by bus to Casablanca, Rabat (the capital) and Marrakech. If you decide to take one of these: Be extremely careful of your valuables, especially at night. Watch what you eat and drink. The thieves — some as young as 13 — stole 1,300 gold necklaces in July and August alone. Police Inspector Edward Cappello says some of the chain smatchers have become so brazen they rip off necklaces even as police are in puruit. Cappello told how a nimble chain snatcher reached into the window of a 42nd Street crosstown bus, stalled in traffic, and swiped a passenger's $1,600 necklace.
