Pro-Canada forces off to poor start

In Quebec referendum battle

- Liberal leader Claude Ryan
suffered an embarrassing
setback on the eve of the
referendum campaign's
Official start, when an eveat
publicized as a major rally
drew half the anticipated

number of people.

Ryan and some 15 other
pro-federalist speakers were
scheduled to address
residents in this stronghold

of nationalist sentiment and
organizers had predicted
6,000 would show up for
Sunday's rally.

Ryan, who said the ‘no’
committee had chosen
Chicoutimi for one of its first
big rallies as a “token of
good will,” said later: “The
organizers here must have
been dreaming in
technicolor when they said
they expected 6,000 persons.

Some 3,000 showed up but

several hundred — perhaps
weary from nearly three
hours of speeches — began
leaving the Georges Vezina
hockey arena before Ryan's
hour-long address ended.

“I didn't expect more than
what we had,” the former
newspaper publisher said
later. “We chose this area
first because we knew it was
a tough region to crack.

The mood picked up a few
hours later in Val d'Or when
