Any criticism of “6 RMS RIV VU” being presented by the North Vancouver Com- munity Players at the Studio Theatre in North Van’s Presentation House would be exactly the reverse. Bob Randall’s comedy is light in the extreme. The improbable, gossamer-thin plot leaves an attractive young man and woman, each happily married, ac- cidentally locked up together in a vacant New York apartment which they are inspecting. The inevitable happens and — in a rather sweet, otd-fashioned way — they wind up having Comedy at Janus Opening March 19 at the Janus Theatre, 2611 West 4th Avenue in Vancouver, is the romantic bitter-sweet comedy THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN by Pulitzer winner Frank D. Gilroy. Set in Las Vegas, Gilroy's play tosses together a wisecracking compulsive gambler and a beautiful but lonely chorus girl, and adds a possessive married lover to complicate their budding romance. Directed by Mark Acheson, THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN is a heartwarming and, at times, uproariously funny account of “winning and losing”. David Akridge and Lisa Toniak take the star roles, supported by Jack Crowston. All the more credit, therefore, is due to the North Van Players for the charm and verve with which they handle the author’s flimsy material — par- ticularly the principals, Susan Trudell and Philip Moreno, who carry the dialogue alone for about an hour and a quarter out of the total hour and 40 minutes or so. This feat alone may qualify the play for the Guinness Book of Records. Both Trudell and Moreno give polished and lively performances, spiced with plenty of gentle humor and appealing little cameos of burgeoning young love. They are competently supported by Sylvia Holinaty, Barry Hammond, Judi McLean (who hopes to survive the production without giving birth), Randy Fallis, Laura Thaw and Dan Sheehy. One feels a little sorry the playwright didn’t allow more stage time for these latter six. The well-paced production is directed by Audrey Rowlands. Between them — making the most of what Randall has given them — the North Van Players succeed in providing an evening of happy and amusing entertainment which measures up well to the group’s previous ‘suc- cesses. “6 RMS RIV VU” runs again this week at the Studio from Wednesday through Saturday (March 19-22).
